We just implemented SharePoint 2010 search at my company, and I was having problems getting the Tab Navigation control to show up on my search results pages for users with lesser privileges than me. The Tab Navigation control is the one that lets you toggle back and forth between “All Sites” and “People” in your search resutlts. You can also add additional tabs if you’ve set up custom search scopes, but we are just using the All Sites and People scopes right now.
After setting up our search site, I could see the tabs just fine (see picture below); however when I logged in as another user with contributor or visitor rights, the tabs were not visible.
When you create a Search Center using the “Enterprise Search Center” site template, it creates two lists for you (“Tabs in Search Pages” and “Tabs in Search Results”) containing entries that are utilized by the tab control to render the links.
Turns out that in order for anyone else other than the site creator (or someone with Owner or Designer rights) to see these links, they must first be published. As soon as I published all the links in these lists, the tabs displayed for all users. Woot!
